The censer is made of gold openwork that comprises an auspicious pattern of interconnected characters for longevity (shou), happiness (xi), and myriad (i.e., ten-thousand, wan). Two solid characters translated as Great Fortune (Da ji) are the central feature of the piece. The design of openwork would have facilitated the wafting smoke of the fragrant incense. The censer has a chain for suspension; the joints of the chain are embellished in the form of a bat at each side of the gourd’s mouth.

　　金镂空葫芦式香熏，清，高42cm，口径7.3cm，底径13.5cm。

　　香熏为金质，葫芦形。通体以“寿”、“喜”、“万”字相间组成镂空图案，以为散香之用。中央开光处有“大”、“吉”二字，侧饰双蝠衔链纹。香熏内有银质光素盛香胆。器下置紫檀木座。
　　在紫禁城的宫殿、寝室内，陈设的金银制品比比皆是，如皇帝宝座前陈设有金制甪端、香筒、香熏、仙鹤；而寝宫和书房等居所中则有盆景、炉、瓶、盒、如意、花瓶等数不胜数。它们或摆放在桌案条几之上，或置于大小多宝格之中，供帝后赏玩，其中许多还兼有使用功能。
