The Institute of Architecture and Planning is a non-designated institution for scientific research affiliated to the Palace Museum Academy. Undertaking research in the fields of architecture and planning in service to the Palace Museum, the institute encourages researchers to participate in the institute’s name in scientific research projects and topics sponsored by ministries and departments on the national, provincial, and municipal level. While building close connections with related research organizations, it advances exchange and cooperation between the Palace Museum and related bodies.
The institute’s primary work is interdisciplinary research on the cultural heritage of ancient Chinese architecture and planning as represented by the Forbidden City, the former palace of the Ming and Qing. In converting completed research results, the institute serves as a think tank for cultural transmission in relation to government policy decisions.
