Popular in Sweden during the 17th and the 18th centuries, exquisite and durable Chinese porcelains were exported in large quantities to this northern European country. The exhibition comprises four sections: Eternal Myth: The Gothenburg; Pearls Overseas: Chinese Porcelains Treasured by the Swedish; Imported Treasures: Western-style Porcelains in the Palace Museum Collection; and A New Discovery in Archaeology: The Swedish Archaeologist J. G. Andersson and Chinese Yangshao Culture. The exhibition employs audio, optical and electronic technologies to introduce visitors to these special collections. The exhibition is held to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Palace Museum. Porcelains on show are those salvaged from the Gothenburg, a Swedish merchant vessel that sank on its way back from China in the 18th century. Volvo, the Sweden-based automobile company and one of the sponsors, will donate eighteen porcelains to the Palace Museum after the exhibition.
