The Jun kilns, located in Yuzhou City, Henan Province, were among the largest-scale and most important kilns in northern China during the Song, Jurchen Jin, and Yuan dynasties (960-1368).
  Jun wares are renowned for their brilliant color. In particular, the Jun kilns gained fame for the invention of a copper red flambé glaze, achieved by using copper oxide as colorant in a reducing atmosphere.
  During the Jurchen Jin and Yuan dynasties, many kilns in Henan, Hebei, Shanxi and Zhejiang produced Jun-glazed wares and formed a large Jun Kiln network. In the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) the Jingdezhen kilns in Jiangxi, Yixing kilns in Jiangsu, and Shiwan kilns in Guangdong, among other places, also fired porcelain wares using Jun glaze.
  This exhibition focuses mainly on Jun porcelain wares, as well as those in imitation of Jun wares or made with Jun glaze, from the Palace Museum collection. In addition, some shards discovered in archeological excavations at the Juntai kiln site in Yuzhou city and representative Jun wares loaned from sister museums will also be shown. The displays give insight into Jun wares passed down from ancient times or unearthed at historical sites, and provide an opportunity for studying and appreciating priceless cultural relics.
