Selected Fan Faces of the Ming and the Qing Dynasties (1368-1911)

The Palace Museum houses thousands of folding fan faces datable to the Ming and the Qing dynasties. Their large number and high quality make it rank first among global museums. The exhibition features sixty-three folding fans faces, covering the dynasties\' mainstream painting schools and including major works of artists. There are paintings by literati painters including  Shen Zhou (1427-1509), Tang Yin (1470-1523), Gong Xian (1618-1689), and Ren Yi (1839-1896), as well as by court painters including Jiang Tingxi (1669-1732), Dong Bangda (1699-1769 or 1774), and Zhang Zongcang (1686-1756). The illustrated fan faces vividly present a variety of themes, including landscape, bird-and-flower, and figure, with such different painting techniques as fine-line rendering, free sketch, heavy color splash, and ink monochrome.
