Paintings and Calligraphic Works of Zhao Mengfu

Although the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) was ruled by Mongols, its world of calligraphy and painting was still dominated by Confucianism. Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322) was an influential figure who at that time stood out from his contemporaries and led the transformation of the ethos of the times.
Zhao Mengfu was an erudite and virtuous scholar renowned for his attainments in literature, calligraphy, and painting. Aside from his own high achievements, Zhao also emphatically called for the change of calligraphic style by learning from ancient models and the application of calligraphic principles to painting. These ideas exerted a far-reaching influence on the development of Chinese art.
This exhibition brings to the public not only the works that inspired Zhao Mengfu, his art accomplishment and influence, but also the correspondent manifold artworks of different periods with which they stand in dialogue.
To view Zhao Mengfu\'s works is both to witness an epoch-making master of art and to reach a fresh understanding of his time.
