The scroll painting A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains is the only extant work by the Northern Song painter Wang Ximeng. It portrays China’s splendid rivers and mountains. Across the painting, peaks rise and fall in an unbroken sweep; rivers stretch wide with mist and rippling haze; the scene brims with ever-changing atmospheres—magnificent, grand, and vast. It has long been regarded as a monumental masterpiece among Song-dynasty blue-and-green landscape paintings.
